What is SAP Joule Work?
Joule Work is SAP’s intent-based engagement layer: a workspace that overlays and orchestrates the SAP applications you already run, instead of replacing them. The premise is that most real work spans several systems, and the cost of that work is the switching - between transactions, tabs and tools. Joule Work asks you to describe the outcome, and keeps the execution in one place.
It was announced at SAP Sapphire in May 2026, alongside the new Joule Studio. It is the consume surface of SAP’s agent strategy; Joule Studio is where you build.
The three building blocks
Conversations
The natural-language interface, grounded in SAP’s business data and process knowledge. This is the part that most resembles classic Joule - but it is not scoped to a single application’s context.
Spaces
The genuinely new idea. A Space is a persistent, outcome-shaped work area that Joule assembles for you, combining analytical and transactional content so you can review KPIs, inspect records, approve actions and trigger workflows without leaving it. Where classic Joule answers a question and forgets it, a Space is where a piece of work lives while it is in progress.
Develop
The entry point from Joule Work into Joule Studio - the seam between using agents and building them. If you are building custom agents, see our guide to Joule Studio classic.
Underneath these, Joule Assistants - AI team members organised by functional area - coordinate teams of Joule Agents.
What you can actually use today
This matters more than the capability list, because the surfaces are at different stages:
- Mobile app - generally available. It is the rebrand of SAP Mobile Start.
- Web client - Early Adopter Care, with GA planned for H2 2026.
- Desktop app - Early Adopter Care from Q2 2026, GA planned H2 2026. See our guide to Joule Work Desktop.
There is also Microsoft Teams and Slack integration. Direct business-system integration confirmed so far is S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition; on-premise landscapes reach it through MCP servers rather than native integration.
How it differs from classic Joule
Classic Joule is a copilot embedded inside an SAP application, scoped to that application’s context. Joule Work is a workspace above all of them - spanning SAP and non-SAP systems, with persistent Spaces instead of one-shot question and answer. The two are complementary, not a migration: classic Joule remains the in-app assistant.
What a technical buyer should know
- A2A is dated and directional. Bi-directional A2A reaches GA in Q4 2026, which is what enables third-party agents to call Joule Agents. Before then, plan outbound.
- Domain coverage is partial. Assistants and Agents span five autonomous domains - finance, spend, supply chain, HCM and CX - rolling out through the end of 2026.
- Voice is separate. Voice for Joule is its own early-adopter programme, not part of Joule Work.
- Grounding. Agents draw on SAP Knowledge Graph, SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Domain Models (GA Q3 2026).
We have not found an authoritative statement of Joule Work pricing or AI-Unit consumption, so we are not going to guess at one. Confirm commercials with SAP directly.
How to prepare
The useful work is not waiting for GA. Joule Work is only as good as what it can reach, and what it can reach is decided by your integration surface - which is why MCP matters more than the workspace itself. If your business data and actions are exposed as governed, well-described tools, Joule Work has something to orchestrate. If they are not, it has a nice interface over nothing.
